01:42 Jury reaches partial verdict in Sean Combs trial, but stuck on racketeering conspiracy count
We begin tonight with the breaking news in the Sean Diddy Combs trial. Late this afternoon, the jury telling the judge they have reached a partial verdict. They have decided on four of the five counts telling the judge they are stuck on one of those counts.
count [kaʊnt] n.【律】(被控告的)罪状
The racketeering conspiracy charge, the jury deliberating for just a day and a half and reaching this partial verdict again, four of five counts, their verdict not revealed at this hour because the judge telling them to keep going on that fifth count.
The Combs trial went on for nearly two months with graphic testimony and disturbing sexually explicit images. Earlier today, the jury asking for a transcript from Cassie Ventura's testimony about this 2016 hotel attack captured on surveillance.
She testified she was trying to escape when Combs assaulted her. The jury made up of eight men and four women. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Late today, the judge telling them to keep an open mind and to keep deliberating ABC's chief investigative correspondent Aaron Katersky.
He's live at the courthouse tonight and he leads us off. Aaron.
After a day and a half of deliberations. David, we have an incredible cliffhanger here, a verdict but no conclusion, a defendant who looked shaken and a jury told it's not done yet.
cliffhanger [ˋklɪf͵hæŋɚ] n. 扣人心弦的比赛;高潮迭起,扣人心弦,紧张悬疑
Tonight, 13 hours into deliberations, jurors said they have reached a verdict on four of the five criminal counts against Sean Combs but said they're stuck on the racketeering conspiracy charge.
The judge instructing them to keep going. The eight man, four woman jury sent a note saying there are unpersuadable opinions on both sides.
unpersuadable [͵ʌnpɚˋswedəb!] adj. 说服不了的
The note said the jury is prepared to release a verdict on the two counts of sex trafficking and two counts of transportation for prostitution.
When the note came in Combs, who was denied all charges, looks stricken. He sat in a chair with his chin resting on his palm, defense attorney standing in a huddle around him. At one point, Combs wiped his eyes.
stricken [ˋstrɪkən] adj. 受挫折的
His mother, sons and twin daughters sat stone-faced in the second row.
stone-faced 面无表情的
Racketeering conspiracy requires jurors to find Combs led a criminal enterprise and agreed to commit at least two of eight underlying crimes like arson, where prosecutors allege he jealously ordered the firebombing of rapper Kid Cudi's car or bribery, where they say he tried to pay off a hotel security guard after surveillance cameras captured him attacking Cassie Ventura. The judge told jurors, I ask at this time that you keep deliberating.
firebombing [ˋfaɪr͵bɑmɪŋ] n. 燃烧弹轰炸; 用火爆弹攻击
pay off 付清工资后解雇
He reminded them of their duty to consult with one another and to deliberate with a view to reaching an agreement, adding they should not hesitate to change an opinion when convinced that it is erroneous.
erroneous [ɪˋronɪəs] adj. 错误的;不正确的
So let's get right back to Aaron Katersky live at the courthouse tonight. Aaron again, as you've reported, the jury at this hour says it's reached an agreement on four counts, the charges of sex trafficking and transportation for purposes of prostitution.
But again, as you have reported here, they are stuck on the racketeering conspiracy charge. So what happens now? And what are legal observers saying tonight? A day and a half in a partial verdict on four of five counts against Sean Combs. What could this mean for Combs?
Based on his demeanor alone, David? He didn't seem to think this is going very well for him, but there really is no way to know for sure, and it could cut either way.
demeanor [dɪˋminɚ] n. 举动,行为
Honestly, at this point, we do know there is consensus on four of the five council. The jury is working together. Maybe they're stuck on what it means to be part of a criminal conspiracy.
The jury is going to come back. Start fresh tomorrow, David. After more than 13 hours of deliberations so far, David
Aaron Katersky leading us off on the breaking news tonight.
Aaron, thank you.

Powerful thunderstorms moving right up the I-95 corridor. More than 30 million Americans under severe weather threats, damaging winds and flash flooding ahead tonight. The storms have already turned deadly.
Police say a woman was killed in an SUV that collided with a fallen tree. This is in Wilmington, Delaware.
The storms tonight, just as millions traveled for the Fourth, Lee Goldberg times out the storms this evening and he has the Fourth of July weather for the whole nation and Stephanie Ramos on the images coming in now
Tonight, flight cancellations and delays increasing by the hour as powerful storms packing wind, hail and lightning target the northeast for the second night in a row.
Interstate 95 inundated amid a flash flood warning for Philadelphia late today.
This is a reminder, turn around, don't drown. If you see water over the road, do not try to drive through it.
White House flags rippling in the wind as the storms engulf the nation's capital.
Overnight storms dumping half a foot of rain in parts of Pennsylvania, triggering a flash flood emergency in Lancaster County and in Wilmington, Delaware, a 79 year old woman was killed when a tree fell right in front of the car she was riding in.
The driver swerved, but it was too late. Those storms also brought ground stops to most of the major northeast airports on one of the busiest days to fly.
swerve [swɝv] v. 突然转向;转弯
Our Gio Benitez with teams from United Airlines early this morning as they tracked traffic in and out of Newark airport.
We are inside the United operations center here at Newark right now. It is very, very busy, more than half a million United passengers this week alone and take a look. They are watching that weather very closely
With 300,000 flights scheduled nationwide. The FAA. says this could be the busiest 4th of July holiday period in 15 years.
And David travel is a mess. More than 1300 flights have been canceled.
The most affected airports, D. C. Reagan, New York LaGuardia and right here in Newark, David.
A lot of headaches. We see the lines there behind you, Stephanie.
Thank you. Let's get right to meteorologist Lee Goldberg of our New York station. W. A. B. C. What do you see, Lee?
David, I see storms circling New York City right now, but the severe staying to the south.
We've had a rough afternoon evening in D. C. With trees knocked down, we've had flooding still flood warnings in Philly and Baltimore.
The severe thunderstorm watch until nine o'clock tonight and ongoing flooding across parts of southern New Jersey. These storms for the next few hours can still produce some 70 MPH gusts and some flash flooding, especially across southern New Jersey, the Delmarva and into eastern Virginia.
Later on tonight, just some lingering showers that will move offshore. One more round of storms on Thursday and the northeast gets a great Fourth of July. That is not the case across Florida.
Unfortunately, a straddled front there. Low pressure along. It could be tropical.
straddle [ˋstræd!] v. 跨过,横跨(边界、河流等)
The next name would be Chantal. But regardless of named or not, you're looking at heavy downpours, potential flooding in days of rain into the weekend in terms of the Fourth dry in the southeast, dry in the northeast. But you're looking at heat building into the Midwest.
Some showers from the northern Rockies to Texas. The West looks dry. But once again, for the Macy's fireworks, we couldn't be nicer.
Low humidity, nice and dry eighties by day seventies in the evening hour. David in the short term, just have to worry about a few more hours of storms in the north.
All right, and then it clears.
Thank you, Lee. very much.
08:30 Trump’s megabill passes in Senate after Vance breaks tie in cliffhanger vote
We turn now to the breaking news from Washington tonight.
President Trump's spending and tax cut bill passing in the Senate. It was very close. Vice President J. D. Vance with the tie-breaking vote.
The bill includes major cuts to Medicaid. More than 11 million Americans could lose their health insurance. It includes roughly four trillion in tax cuts benefiting the wealthy, and it's estimated it will add 3.3 trillion to the debt over 10 years.
So what does it now face in the house? Here's Mary Bruce.
Tonight, President Trump's sweeping bills, slashing taxes for the wealthy and boosting spending for immigration enforcement squeaking through the Senate with a tie breaking vote from the vice president.
squeak [skwik] v.【口】勉强通过;侥幸成功;险胜[(+by/through)]
On this vote. The yeas are 50. The nays are 50. The Senate being evenly divided. The vice president votes in the affirmative.

nay [ne] n. 否定;拒绝;否定的回答;反对票;投反对票的人

The bill, as amended, is passed.
The bill features roughly $4 trillion in tax cuts, mostly for the wealthiest Americans.
That will spur economic growth and more jobs and opportunities for American workers.
spur [spɝ] v. 刺激,激励;鼓舞
It also fulfills the president's campaign promise to eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, and it includes deep cuts to Medicaid, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says will cause 11.8 million Americans to lose their health insurance over the next decade.
The American people will not forget the betrayal, the betrayal that took place today. Three Republican senators voting. No.
Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska delivering the deciding yes vote after negotiating in Alaska exception for some cuts to food stamps. She called her decision agonizing.
exception [ɪkˋsɛpʃən] n. 除外;除去; 不包括…在内
agonizing [ˋægə͵naɪzɪŋ] adj. 使人极度痛苦的
Senator Paul said that this was that your vote was a bailout for Alaska. That's what Senator Paul said. It was easy.
Senator, we've got, uh, I didn't say I'm just asking for your …
And after a long pause,
Do I like this bill? No, I tried to take care of Alaska's interests, but I know I know that in many parts of the country there are Americans that are not going to be advantaged by this bill. I don't like this.
advantage [ədˋvæntɪdʒ] v. 获利
But in Florida, where he was touring a new detention facility for undocumented immigrants, President Trump thrilled. The big beautiful bill just passed.
Oh, thank you. Wow. Thank you.
Trump has repeatedly pledged he would not cut Medicaid. He now insists the cuts in the bill only target waste, fraud and abuse.
Are you saying that the estimated 11.8 million people who could lose their health coverage? That is all waste, fraud and abuse.
No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying it's gonna be a very much smaller number than that, and that number will be waste, fraud and abuse.
What number is that? What analysis are you? Are you seeing? I'm not seeing a number, but I know it's much less than the number you gave.
And David, the president is also lashing out at Elon Musk, who's criticized the bill, which would eliminate the $7500 tax credit for electric vehicles, which has benefited Tesla.
Today, the president threatening to go after Musk using the very agency Musk himself created, saying perhaps it's time for DOGE to take a hard look at his government contracts. As for the future of the bill tonight, it is now in the hands of the House, where it is already facing resistance from some Republicans. David.
go after 追逐, 追踪
All right, Mary Bruce, I know you'll be watching it for us. Thank you.

15:24 David Muir, Diane Sawyer, Charlie Gibson honor "World News Tonight" stage manager after decades-long career
Funny tonight here. A personal note about someone we will miss here at ABC News.
There she is right there.
The one person who is here every night who you don't see. Michelle Mayer has been standing right next to that camera cueing me and so many other anchors. Peter, Charlie, Diane for decades.
cue [kju] v.【戏】给…提示; 给……暗示
She's been at ABC News for more than 30 years. And if you look closely, this wide shot of the studio before we go on the camera pans Shelly with her hands on her hips, and I always call out for her Shelly.
And then, as Michelle knows more than anyone in these chaotic times, right before we go on our joke, I triple check. We know what day it is.
It's good to have you here on a Wednesday night, Wednesday. Michelle started as a prompter operator for Peter Jennings back in the mid 1990s and then stage manager.
prompter [prɑmptɚ] n. 提示台词的设备;提词人
Peter on his way to the studio there. Shelly on set there in the background, ready for him. She would travel with Peter to Hong Kong, the conventions to Cuba, working with Charlie Gibson when he became anchor.
She always knew that Charlie would walk up those stairs to the studio at the last minute, and then she was there for Diane Sawyer, her partner behind the scenes while Diane was on the air, guiding her as she has guided us all.
And on this night, when we now say goodbye, Diane wanted to make sure that everyone watching at home knows about the person we all count on behind the camera.
I just want all the wonderful people who watch world news to know that when you're watching the person sitting at this desk, you're really also watching the coach behind the camera. Michelle always there to say, move it along or slow it down or time to get out.
Or in my case, she had signs printed up most often.
And when Shelly says, sit up straight, you do. And when we reached out to Charlie to ask if he wanted to share a word or two about Michelle, his answer was, of course, yes.
The first night the show was mine, not just filling in for Peter. I came into the studio and Michelle said to me, there may be some people around here a little bit afraid of you. I'm not.
I'm the person who will tell you what to do. And she did in the nicest way for four years.
She calls us all her anchors from Peter to Charlie to Diane.
And how lucky am I? More than a decade now as my partner. But she says the time has come to catch her breath back home in Kentucky.
catch one’s breath 停下来让呼吸平缓下来
I am still in denial about all this. I cannot believe that Shelly is leaving, my partner in crime out there. She's the one who's cueing me every single night standing next to the camera. But Shelly, only for you.
partner in crime 损友;(惯常的)犯罪同谋
Tonight I hope you'll notice that you're gonna see my cuffs. The only reason anyone ever sees cuffs is because Shelly's always saying, pull your pull your cuffs, my watch.
cuff [kʌf] n. 袖口
I've got my watch on because Shelly likes when I show up with my watch on only happens like once or twice a year.
Got a full suit on today only for you, Shelly. As you know, usually jeans from the waist down behind that desk. But for you, the full suit because I know you don't dig the jeans.
dig [dɪg] v.【俚】懂;喜欢
And, um, I got a haircut. I got a haircut for you, Shelly. And Diane had a message on their shared love of home.
We were just two Kentucky girls who got to the big city. She was hilarious and you needed the last and most of all, she isn't always will be a person who cares passionately about what we do.
And Michelle, that passion helping us all be the best we can be for so long.
This moment is yours. You deserve this, Shelly. Go home to Kentucky.
You'll be back with your family and the horses and the beautiful countryside. And what? In 11 years this has been with you by my side. I don't know what I'm gonna do.
You will be missed, but you've set the bar. We'll be pulling down our shirt sleeves and sitting up straight for years to come. Because we know if we don't, we'll be hearing from someone in Kentucky.
bar [bɑr] n. a standard, expectation, or degree of requirement
All right, so let's show her she doesn't let me do this. But on the last night, let's show Shelly over here, killing me off the air. How many seconds do I have left? Three.
We love you, Shelly. Good night.
