Why do roses have thorns? 为什么玫瑰花有刺呢？
(A) To drink more water. 为了吸取更多水分。
(B) To protect themselves. 为了自我防护。
(C) To fight other plants. 为了和其他植物争斗。
Roses have a sweet smell to attract insects. That's because insects help pollinate roses. However, the smell also attracts other animals. The thorns on rose stems keep animals from getting close and eating the flowers.
答案是：(B) 为了自我防护。
玫瑰散发香甜的气息来吸引昆虫，是因为昆虫可协助玫瑰授粉。然而，这气息也会招引其他动物，而玫瑰茎上的刺便是防止动物接近而吃掉花朵。
Did you know: thorns actually develop before the flower? If the flower developed first, there wouldn't be any thorns to protect it. So, roses with the strongest thorns are able to grow flowers with the best smell.
你知道吗？花刺其实比花朵更早生成。若是花朵先长出，便没有任何刺保护它了。因此，有着最强健花刺的玫瑰株便能绽放出香气最芬芳的花朵。
