Children run down the street laughing wildly and throw red and blue liquid on a stranger. At first, the man is surprised, but in an instant he smiles because he knows it’s Holi. This spring festival is all about forgetting the worries of life and painting the town, literally. Because revelers throw colored powders and bright tinted water all over each other, Holi is often called the festival of colors.

Holi is celebrated on the day after the last full moon of winter, mostly in India and Nepal. Although it originally honored good harvests and beginning of spring, there are now ties to Hindu legend. As the myth goes, the king of demons’ son, Prahlada, chose to worship Lord Vishnu, rather than his own father. Angered by this, the king of demons tried to kill his own son. However, by continuing to give prayers to Vishnu, Prahlada was kept safe. Finally, the king’s sister, Holika, tried to burn Prahlada, but she was the one who burnt to death. Thus, Holi derives its name from Holika, and is celebrated as a festival of victory of good over evil.

Since fire is important to the story of Holi, the celebration gets started the night before with the lighting of bonfires. As the night turns to day, the colors of Holi begin to fly. People partake in painting their friends, family, and even strangers in a variety of vibrant hues. Young people are especially aggressive; they drop colorful balloons from roofs or drive around in vehicles, shooting water pistols out the window.

The reason that strangers can douse each other without offense is that Holi is a day of equality. On this holiday, all groups of society come together as one: young and old, rich and poor, and male and female. Newspapers often display pictures of government leaders having been splashed with colors.

All the excitement halts in the afternoon, when everyone bathes. Exhausted partyers then spend time visiting their loved ones, offering hugs and candies. As the festival ends, social norms are restored and splashing people with paint will again be inexcusable.
