Flowers, decorative paper banners, and colorful skulls made of sugar appear each November 2 in Mexico. They signal the arrival of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a holiday meant to honor deceased family members. Despite being about the dead, this holiday is festive, lively, and filled with dancing skeletons and bright decorations everywhere you look.

Day of the Dead celebrations date back about 3,000 years to the ancient Aztec (阿兹特克) and Maya (玛雅) people. On that day, they honored past relatives, a goddess known as the “Lady of Death,” and children, which together symbolized death and rebirth. A relative’s skull was the centerpiece in rituals and was decorated to recreate the person’s face.

These days, people in Mexico visit the graves of relatives to clean their tombs and place fresh flowers. People also set up altars with photos of their deceased relatives at home. There, they light candles, hang paper banners, and make offerings of bread, sugar skulls, and water. This festival has also spread to the US and other Latin American countries. It’s safe to say that this colorful tradition won’t be lost any time soon.
