In 1980, the United States was suffering from a poor economy and low international prestige. ___1___ In the following eight years, Reagan shaped and strengthen the conservative movement in the United States.

Before entering politics, Reagan had been a successful Hollywood actor. In the 1950s, he became more conservative and even testified before congress against actors who had supported communism. Reagan’s political influence grew, and in 1966, he was elected governor of California, and Reagan honed his skills as a politician and public speaker. ___2___

President Reagan was known as “the Great Communicator.” ___3___ His enemies often had trouble making him look bad, and criticism always seemed to slip right of him. This earned Reagan the nickname “the Teflon President.”

Reagan has been credited with winning the Cold War and restoring pride to American conservatism. ___4___ In the months before his death in 2004, Reagan had to be reminded daily that he had once as the president of the United States. Reagan will be remembered as a president who led the United States to prosperity and peace “through strength.” ___5___
