Like other four-year-olds, Marla Olmstead is learning her numbers and letters, and still has trouble printing her name. She adores her little brother, flowers, the color yellow and pigs. ___1___

Marla was just a toddler when her father gave her some paper and paint to amuse her while he was trying to paint. ___2___ It was better than his work! Marla’s parents encouraged her to continue painting.

When Marla was three, a family friend hung some of her paintings in his coffeehouse. ___3___ Marla’s mother, sentimentally attached to her daughter’s work, asked US$250 for one painting, sure that no one would pay that much. But to everyone’s surprise, the painting sold.

Marla and her paintings soon became famous. ___4___ She has been interviewed on the TV news program 60 Minutes and featured in newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times and Time.

___5___ However, some skeptics believe her parents are helping her when she paints – an accusation that Marla’s mother and father strongly deny. In any case, her parents aren’t pushing her too hard to pursue her art. “Right now, painting is fun for her,” her mother says, and Marla’s parents both want to keep it that way.
