Shei-Pa National Park lies like an emerald in Taiwan’s north-central mountain range. Covered in virgin forest, Shei-Pa is a unique treasure, both geologically and biologically. Soaring over 3,400 meters, the mountains throughout the park are among the tallest in East Asia. Dense fog often swirls around the peaks, lending them additional mystery. Plunging down the mountains and cutting through the forest are scores of streams and rivers.

Shei-Pa is the meeting place of tropical and subtropical climates. Consisting of both alpine and valley regions, Shei-Pa has several distinct ecosystems and tremendous biodiversity. Throughout the forest live rare animals, including the Formosan black bear. Many bird species make their home here. The largest high-mountain junipers and a rare kind of balsam tree found nowhere else in the world grow here. The 2,000-year-old Kuaishan Sacred Tree stands tall among them.

The Formosan landlocked salmon, an especially rare and endangered animal, also inhabits Shei-Pa. As the last ice age came to a close, water at the lowest elevations became too warm, so the salmon stayed in the mountain streams and rivers. As mid-elevation rivers became more polluted, the fish were confined to an ever-diminishing habitat. Today, efforts are being made to save this rare species. Human activity beside these rivers is prohibited, and intensive breeding programs have been established.

The name Shei-Pa is derived from two of the biggest mountains in the park: Snow (Syue) and Tyrant (Dabajian). An Atayal legend describes how the human race came from Dabajian Mountain. After a boulder at its peak was pushed over by birds, the huge stone cracked open and a boy and a girl, the ancestors of the Atayal people, emerged. Along with the Saisiyat, they lived in the forests, hunting, fishing and farming. Most of the trails within the park follow the original ones made by the two tribes as they crisscrossed the mountains.

There are still about 90,000 members of the Atayal tribe living here. They were once known for their facial tattoos and for filing down their teeth, but they have abandoned these practices. They speak the original Atayal language as well as Mandarin. As accomplished weavers, they weave their traditional costumes with bright, dazzling colors in different geometric patterns.

Keeping aboriginal languages and culture alive in the Shei-Pa region is important because this ensures future generations can understand the island’s history. As well, the administrators of Shei-Pa are dedicated to the protection of ecologically-important areas. They also promote scientific research and environmental education at the park. Of course, you don’t have to be a scientist or an anthropologist to enjoy this national treasure. Whether you hike the mountains, watch birds and butterflies, or simply lose yourself in a magnificent natural setting, all can be enjoyed in the grandeur of Shei-Pa national Park.
