Relaxing at home, you watch elephants and zebras roam across your TV screen. Change channels, and a snake silently stalks its prey as you squirm on your sofa. ___1___Plus, they raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection. But now, a show on Animal Planet called Lyndal’s Lifeline is doing more. The show is saving wildlife with cold hard cash.

With each episode, the show donates US$10,000 to an organization that is saving animals’ lives – possible even saving some from extinction. ___2___And every dollar counts when trying to undo the damage done. Sadly, the biggest threat to endangered animals usually comes from humans.

In Brisbane, Australia, a koala hospital used their $10,000 donation to buy land. ___3___ Sun bears rescued from the pet trade in Thailand got a better enclosure thanks to Lyndal’s Lifeline. In Sao Paulo, Brazil, the show also paid for a transit center where illegally captured animals get a ticket back to the wild where they belong.

___4___ Nature shows inspire us to care more about the environment, and Lyndal’s Lifeline does as well. ___5___ Saving the planet required work, dedication, and cash. And every little bit makes a difference.

(A) These are just a few of the organizations that have been helped by Lyndal’s Lifeline.

(B) Now, koalas saved by the hospital have a safe place to live in the wild.

(C) The host, Lyndal Davies, and her film crew then show us how the money is being used.

(D) However, it also shows us that just caring isn’t enough.

(E) Watching nature shows has always been fun.

If you’ve been watching Animal Planet lately, you’ve probably seen the fresh, smiling face of Lyndal Davies. She’s the host of Lyndal’s Lifeline, a nature show dedicated to saving wildlife. In an interview with English Digest, Lyndal talked to us about her new show: “We need to move away from just showing nice pictures of animals. We have to talk about what’s happening out there.” And according to Lyndal, a lot is happening. “Yes, the world’s animals are in danger. Yes, many of them will be extinct in the next twenty years. It’s not too late to make a difference, but we have to do something now – not tomorrow, not the next day, not the next year.”

Although the future of many animal species looks bleak, Lyndal believes there is hope. “In little ways, we can start to turn the tide.” Lyndal reminds us that it’s the day-to-day choices we make that make the difference. For example, recycling helps preserve the habitats of endangered animals. Refusing to buy medicines that use bear bile will save the endangered Asian black bear. We can also stop wasting shark’s lives by never eating shark fin soup.

Lyndal realizes that protecting the environment is an uphill battle, but she believes all of us together can make things better. The wildlife of this planet is quickly disappearing, but as Lyndal told us, “It’s in your hands. You’re the ones who can stop it from happening.”
