Jim Hawkins is a young man whose parents run an inn in southeast England. Life is uneventful for Jim, until one day when a ship captain arrives to stay at the inn. The man likes to drink and then talks a lot about his adventures at sea. Jim enjoys his exciting stories and makes friends with him.

However, one day as the captain gets up from his chair, he feels a pain in his chest, falls over, and dies of a heart attack from a lifetime of drinking too much. Jim is horrified, but eventually goes through the man’s belongings, and finds a treasure map of a faraway island.

He takes the map to two men, who are the most educated people he knows, Squire Trelawney and Doctor Livesey, because he thinks they can help him. The men look at the map, and both agree that it is a treasure map that shows the hiding spot of a pirate’s riches. Trelawney and Livesey decide to go on an adventure with Jim to find the treasure.

The three men find a crew for their ship and meet a sailor with one leg, named Long John Silver, who once was a pirate. With Trelawney and Livesey’s financial support, Silver offers to join them and even finds a captain and a ship for them to sail on. Everything is now in place, thus the entire crew sets sail to find the pirate’s treasure.

One night, Jim crawls into a barrel on the ship’s deck to eat some fruit but accidentally overhears Long John Silver talking to another sailor. Silver tells the sailor that he wants to kill the three men and keep the treasure. Then, Jim realizes that the crew are nothing but pirates.

Jim becomes worried when he learns what Silver plans to do. Then Jim tells Trelawney and Livesey about the pirates’ cunning plan.

When the ship finally reaches the island, the three men sneak into the jungle. They find an abandoned fort that they stay in and use as their base while the crew go ashore.

While Jim wanders the island alone, he finds a stranded man living there. His name is Ben Gunn and he was left behind by the crew that buried the treasure. Gunn agrees to help Jim if he can get him off the island. Jim runs to tell Trelawney and Livesey about Gunn. They are surprised to learn this and feel closer to their goal.

Jim heads out to explore again, yet as he returns to the fort, he is terrified when he sees that the pirates have occupied the fort. Instead of killing him, Long John Silver captures Jim and drags him along with the pirates to find the riches. Yet, when they reach the spot on the map, they are shocked to discover that the treasure is gone.

Moments later, they hear gunshots. Livesey and Gunn fired the shots to distract Silver and rescue Jim. As they run away, Gunn reveals that he hid the treasure elsewhere on the island. Happily, the men haul the treasure onto the ship and sail back home. They share the gold and live comfortably for the rest of their lives.
