In a battle, the side with the more advanced technology holds a huge advantage. Therefore, militaries are constantly trying to create and use better tools of war. Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Tech is all about the greatest engineering feats in the history of military conflict.

One episode of Deadliest Tech discusses bombers. A quick glance at recent wars reveals that air power is a trump card in combat. Today’s modern bombers strike quickly, accurately, and stealthily. Since the age of airplanes is just over a century old, it’s amazing how far along the bomber has come. The show’s narrator describes the history of the bomber as 100 years of technological problem solving.

Soon after the Wright Brothers created their first plane, airmen were using it to drop bombs behind enemy lines. Because these planes were made of wood and linen, they were far from sturdy. Since pilots had to drop explosives by hand, they were not accurate. Despite their problems, bombers showed a lot of potential to be effective in battle.

Between the two World Wars, engineers across the world developed metal monoplanes, strong aircraft with a single pair of wings. During World War II, Germany and Britain relied heavily on bombers to attack each other’s lands. The tide turned in Europe when the US deployed the B-17 Flying Fortress. This plane had heavy armor, up to 8,000 pounds of bombs, and a guidance system to help it aim.

When the smoke from the Second World War cleared, there was no doubt that a powerful air force was an indispensable military asset. In the following decades, advances in bomber technology focused on two elements: the safety of pilots and the accuracy of bombs. The B-2 bomber, which is considered the most advanced of its kind, excels at both. The B-2’s material and shape make it practically invisible to radar. Therefore, it is unlikely to be shot down by enemies. Furthermore, its weapons are guided precisely to their target by a network of satellites. These qualities make the advanced bomber one of the most powerful technological achievements in military history.
