After the long plane ride to Penang, Bourdain recovers with the help of a bowl of spicy wonton noodles. The moment causes the host to reflect on what has brought him to the region: “This part of the world really messed me up. It’s the condiments here, the chilies. Once you have that, there’s no going back.” As proof of his addiction to hot food, Bourdain consumes spicy sauces throughout the entire episode.

On a brief trip outside the city, Bourdain and a few local friends visit a restaurant with no menu. The chefs there cook whatever people bring in. On this occasion, Bourdain and his fellow travelers dine on a wonderful display of fish, prawns, and crabs with curry.

In the capital city of Georgetown, we see the cuisines associated with Penang’s three main ethnic groups: Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian. Crowded food courts bring these influences together. Some vendors use special sauces that are old family secrets. Bourdain’s fire-proof tongue is tested here by one cook’s extremely spicy fish head curry. To see how he swallows this challenge and many more, you’ve got to see No Reservations yourself.
