Cyprus is an island country in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its location, its culture has been influenced greatly by nearby Turkey and Greece. The island’s cuisine is the particular focus of TLC’s show My Cypriot Kitchen. Host Tonia Buxton, a native Cypriot, takes viewers on a journey through her homeland to experience the flavors that make it special.

For Buxton, food and family are closely connected. This connection becomes strongest during the important Christian holiday of Easter. Believers fast for 40 days before Easter Sunday, not eating meat or dairy during those weeks. So when the holiday finally arrives, families are more than ready for a delicious feast.

Then she visits a chocolatier with her two daughters to make enormous eggshells out of all-natural Cyprus chocolate. Finally, on Easter, her uncle Eddie roasts huge skewers of meat for the entire family to enjoy. What a treat after a long fast!

A major part of Tonia Buxton’s Cypriot culinary adventure is making use of fresh local ingredients. One afternoon she meets her chef friend George to go for a walk in the hills. The purpose of their hike is to pick wild herbs by hand. They return to George’s kitchen to prepare a giant hunk of pork with the fresh herbs, plus honey, berries, and olive oil. This kind of dish has been cooked by Greeks for thousands of years.
