The journey of science can sometimes lead to dark places. Every new technology holds potential for both good and evil. Many times, humans are simply unprepared for the power that new discoveries and inventions offer. Discovery Channel’s Dark Matters: Twisted But True explores the times in history when scientific research led to unfortunate consequences.

The strange tales on the program seem to come straight out of a science fiction movie, but they are all true. Yet, just like a creepy movie, they can make you shiver. Consider the biological engineering efforts of Dr. Ilya Ivanov. He successfully crossbred a rat with a mouse, and later a donkey with a zebra. But the doctor would not stop there; he set his sights on mixing humans and chimpanzees. Fortunately, his horrible goal was never achieved.

The show is hosted by veteran actor John Noble. His deep and serious voice sets the mood for these weird tales. Get ready for some chills down your spine. If you are brave enough to explore Dark Mattes, you’ll see a side of science you never expected.

One of science’s greatest achievements was unlocking the energy of the atom. Unfortunately, the might of nuclear power has been misused time and time again. It’s no surprise that several of the stories on Dark Matters involve the dangers of radiation.

The 1920s was an exciting time for businessmen seeking to take advantage of new discoveries. Doctor Albert C. Geyser created a device that could make any woman’s skin “hairless and white.” He did this with a blast of deadly X-rays. Though the procedure appeared successful at first, his customers’ flawless skin eventually became diseased and ugly.

Another profit-seeker was US Radium, a company that used radium paint to make watches glow in the dark. Young ladies painted the radioactive substances on with brushes, which they ignorantly licked to keep the point fine. Unaware of the great risk, the “Radium Girls” became fatally ill.

These stories are awful, but they do offer light at the end of the tunnel. Scientists can learn from mistakes and work toward a brighter future. Check out more shocking tales on Dark Mattes: Twisted But True.
