An assistance dog (协助犬) isn’t just a pet: it can be the eyes, ears, friend, and companion of a disabled person. When most people hear about assistance dogs, they usually think of guide dogs (导盲犬). These dogs lead people who are blind, especially in busy or dangerous public places, and help give them back their independence.

Hearing dogs (导聋犬) perform a similar function, but for people who are deaf. Owners of hearing dogs say they feel safer and secure with the help of their trained dog. What’s more, hearing dogs can alert their owners to phone calls or messages, which helps deaf people stay in better touch with friends and loved ones.

Last but not least, service dogs (肢障辅助犬) are the jack of all trades among assistance dogs. They can help many kinds of disabled people with a number of particular needs, from picking things up off the floor to simply snuggling and making their owners feel loved. Together service dogs and their owners form a unique bond with each other that no other dogs can match.

While guide and hearing dogs can perform a few particular tasks related to one disability, service dogs are even more versatile. One of the most well-known service dogs ever trained was Gretel.

A Labrador Retriever, Gretel became the first service dog in Japan in 1995. Her owner, Mr. Noguchi, was confined to a wheelchair, so Gretel helped him dress, fetched groceries off the shelf, and even opened and closed doors for him. Amazingly, Gretel lived to be 17 years old, which is a very long life for a dog. Even when she was at the end of her life, she was still on duty at Noguchi’s side.

In Taiwan, there is the Taiwan Assistance Dog Association (TADA), which was founded to educate people about assistance dogs and train canines. Under its training programs, puppies are taught to be assistance dogs for disabled people. Though its programs only started two years ago, TADA has already attracted many people’s interest in assistance dogs. With the public’s emotional and financial support, TADA hopes that soon there will be enough assistance dogs trained to care for the disabled in Taiwan.
