Some people seek out fast-paced games like soccer and basketball for excitement. But for others, these just aren’t fast enough. That’s why they prefer to roar down the road on a powerful motor vehicle. The riders in the MotoGP come from this mold of competitor. The Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix, the sport’s full name, is the highest level of motorcycle road racing on Earth.

Racers zoom at speeds up to and over 300 km/h. This outrageous velocity makes the sport extremely dangerous, thus deadly accidents occur from time to time. Despite the risks, riders still continue to go around the course and the globe in hopes of taking home a championship.

MotoGP races currently take place at eighteen locations in thirteen countries. Each event awards the top finishers a certain amount of points. At the end of the racing season, the points are tallied to see who has earned the title. In 2012, Jorge Lorenzo of Spain drove away with the champion’s trophy.

The first MotoGP World championship was held in 1949. Riders on Italian-made bikes dominated the next decade, but Japanese companies soon became prominent. All engine makers have had to adapt as rules about engine specifications have constantly been changed. In 2012, for instance, MotoGP raised the maximum engine capacity to 1,000 cc and limited the number of cylinders to four.

The bikes of the MotoGP are special machines that are illegal for the general public to drive or even purchase. The tires on the bikes are very customizable, depending on weather and rider preference. A rider might burn through as many as ten tires in a single race.

Although the best high-speed motorcycles are made by Japanese companies, the best riders have come from Italy. Valentine Rossi dominated most of the past decade by winning seven championships, one less than record-holder and fellow Italian Giacomo Agostini. However, a new generation of racers all around the world is eager to catch up with these legends of MotoGP.
