Canada’s Sarcastic Ad Campaign

Canada’s British Columbia (B.C.) government has used the sarcastic adHipster is not a real job” to attract young people and get them into job training. The province has projected a labor shortage in shipping, natural gas, and mining industries in coming years.

The “Hipster” ad targets youths who reject mainstream values and fashion. Stereotypical hipsters wear glasses with thick plastic frames, tight jeans, and ironic T-shirts; they prefer working in cafes rather than factories. Online commenters have shown both support for and disapproval of the ad’s suggestion that hipsters lack ambition.

B.C. believes that 435,000 jobs that require skilled workers will open by 2020. However, according to a recent survey, only 25 percent of young people in B.C. have considered learning a trade. The government hopes to solve this problem as soon as possible. “We chose to go with a theme that would catch the attention of our youth and create a buzz, create discussion,” said Minister of Jobs, Pat Bell. Considering the online debate, the ad has been a success.
