The Walt Disney Company has announced that it has acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion. Lucasfilm is best known for the creation of the Star Wars franchise. Aside from the Star Wars movies and merchandise, the deal gives Disney ownership of other Lucasfilm Ltd. properties as well. This includes the Indiana Jones franchise, the visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic, and the sound effects company Skywalker Sound. The move follows Disney’s recent purchases of Pixar in 2006 and Marvel in 2009.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers,” said Star Wars creator and Lucasfilm CEO, George Lucas, in an official press release. Only hours after news of the deal broke, Disney announced plans for a seventh Star Wars movie scheduled for the summer of 2015. It mentioned that it would also produce two more sequels in the following years.
