Putting on a fuzzy costume and dancing for children is serious business in Tokyo, Japan. People there wishing to learn the art of being a costumed mascot enroll at the Choko Group Mascot School. Since opening her school in 1985, Choko Oohira has been teaching classes on how to fully become a character in order to entertain children.

To embody their mascot, according to Oohira, the performers must first take care of costume management. Showing skin or allowing the mask to slip can be a major disappointment. Beyond that, each character has its own way of walking and its own set of gestures. An adorable baby and a scary dragon should obviously move in different manners.

After Oohira’s students learn how to properly play a character, their job prospects are quite favorable. It’s no stretch to say the capital of Japan is also the capital of mascot employment. Hundreds of business and government offices in the city’s region hire mascots for their promotional events. As funny as it may seem, the mascot has found a secure place in modern Japanese culture.
