Newsweek Prints Last Paper Issue

The digital age finally caught up with Newsweek, as the magazine opted to discontinue its print edition, it now provides entirely online content. The well-known publication had been in print for almost eight decades, but it suffered financially in recent years due to dropping sales and decimated ad revenue. Annual losses are said to have reached US$40 million.

Newsweekis not the first big-name publication to go completely online. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report, famous for its comprehensive college rankings, did the same. After restructuring, U.S. News is now profitable and growing. Since Newsweek was purchased two years ago by The Daily Beast, an online news provider, it already has a web-based platform.

Tina Brown, Newsweek’s editor-in-chief, shared her thoughts about the future of printed magazines. “I feel this is not the right medium anymore to produce journalism,” Brown said. The final print edition’s cover presents a bird’s-eye view photograph of what used to be the periodical’s Manhattan office building. Only time will tell whether Newsweek’s shift to the Internet can preserve the iconic magazine.
