Mice with prostate cancer have been completely cured by researchers in the United Kingdom with a new “Trojan-horse” cancer therapy, but human tests are still needed.

The scientists used a cancer-killing virus that they injected into the mice to eliminate the cancer. The team of researchers first drew blood from the mice and separated the white blood cells. These cells, which attack foreign objects in the body, were infused with the virus. The white blood cells were then put inside the mice’s tumors. Once inside, the virus began to reproduce and explode in number before attacking the tumor. This led to the name “Trojan-horse” which comes from the similarity to how the ancient Greeks hid inside a wooden horse to defeat the state of Troy.

The entire experiment took 40 days to complete and at the end, all mice that received treatment lived and had all their tumors eradicated. Despite the promising results, researchers cautioned that treatments which have been successful in mice do not always produce the same results in humans. They said they hope to begin human trials later this year.
