Meteor Explodes over Russia

meteoroid entered the Earth’s atmosphere and exploded over the Ural Mountains in southern Russia earlier this year. The estimated 12-meter object traveled at about 18 km/s before breaking apart 15-25 km above the ground. It exploded with a force of approximately 30 times the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Fortunately, no one died from being hit by the meteoroid.

However, the mid-air explosion created a shock wave that damaged around 3,000 buildings and hurt more than 1,000 people. Most wounds were the result of shattered glass. In Chelyabinsk, a city near the Ural Mountains, office buildings were emptied and classes for all schools were canceled that day for safety.

Within a couple of hours the Russian government confirmed the incident, and sent rescue workers to help the victims. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the event proves the Earth’s vulnerability to meteorite impact. On the day of the explosion, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs proposed a warning system for monitoring near-Earth objects in the future.
