Yahoo Inc. has purchased the mobile news app Summly for about US$30 million. The seventeen-year-old creator of the app, Nick D’Aloisio, has also been given a full-time job in the tech giant’s London office. The deal shows that Yahoo aims to stay competitive in mobile services, according to industry analysts.

The app’s young creator thought of the idea when he was doing research for a school project. He needed an app that could identify key words in articles and turn them into a 400-character summary. Thus, he made summly, which successfully provides accurate snapshots of a topic, while search engines like Google often return a large number of results that are irrelevant.
