Taiwanese dance choreographer Lin Hwai-min is this year’s recipient of the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award celebrates choreographers who have made extraordinary contributions to modern dance. Lin, who has already collected a variety of other prestigious honors, is the first winner based outside of Europe and the US.

In the announcement of the award, the festival’s organizers praised Lin for drawing traditional elements from Asian culture and aesthetics, as well as pushing boundaries to redefine the art form. The prize includes a sum of US$50,000 and a “Sammy,” the trophy named after Mr. Scripps, a leading figure in the world of modern dance who inspired the award.

Lin, who founded Cloud Gate Dance Theater (云门舞集) 40 years ago, was humble in his acceptance, saying, “The award is not only for me; it is for the whole of Taiwanese society.” He proudly credited his homeland for providing Cloud Gate the practical means to continue operation and perform in Taiwan and abroad. Lin will travel to Duke University in North Carolina, where the American Dance Festival takes place every summer, to receive his award.
