In a controversial move made in April, Samoa Air started to charge people base on their weight. Passengers flying on Samoa Air now enter their weight, including luggage, online to determine their fare. The rates range from US$1 to US$4.16 per kilogram, depending on the duration of the flight.

Samoa Air executive Chris Langton said planes can only carry so much weight, and that weight must be paid for. On the flip side, lighter people now pay less than they did before. The airline also provides heavier people with more room to sit.

The country of Samoa, which is in the Pacific Ocean, is ranked as one of the most obese nations in the world. Samoa Air’s new policy has brought more attention to the weight and space problems that airline companies face. However, airline analyst Vaughn Cordle thinks large American airlines will not adopt similar systems because of the potential negative publicity they could cause. Despite this, some travelers support the system and say it’s only fair.
