My school life got a little more interesting this week. On Monday morning I was getting creepy looks from tons of people. I thought I had some ketchup on my face. I was completely clueless until my buddy Mark threw me a bone. It turned out that some kids held a vote on the cutest guys and girls in our school, and then posted the results on the Internet. It sounded like a lame idea, but then Mark told me that I was in the top five. WHOA!

I was strutting around, basking in my newfound glory. Then I started to think: Will I move down the list if I get a bad haircut? Should I even care? I can’t stop looking in the mirror now. News is spreading fast, too. I got an email from my friend Mandy, saying, “Please let me be the president of your fan club!” this is starting to get annoying. I wish that list didn’t even exist.

Stressing over Looks

Teenage students like to compare their peers, especially in terms of physical appearance. Anyone who is very attractive is given a high status in the minds of others. Even adults fall into this simple way of thinking about people. However, this judgmental atmosphere puts crushing social pressure on everyone, especially in school. Nearly all teens, no matter how good-looking, are disappointed with their own appearance. So, what’s the trick to getting over it? Step away from the mirror and build confidence by being friendly and outgoing.

When you stop simply judging people by their looks, you can truly see who they are. Don’t judge a book by its cover. The more you treat people as persons, rather than objects, the more they will do the same for you. Nevertheless, it’s impossible to totally ignore physical beauty; keep brushing your hair, matching your socks, and washing your face every day. Take care of your looks, but keep in mind that stressing about looks won’t make you any prettier. In fact, it could do just the opposite. Focus on your inner beauty, and appreciate that of everyone around you!
