Q: Cars come in many different colors, but tires are always black. Why don’t tires come in different colors?

(A) Other tire colors show dirt more easily.

(B) Black tires last longer than other colors.

(C) Rubber only comes in one color.

A: If you said B, you’re likely never nervous when the rubber meets the road. Back in the day, all tires were white. A tire manufacturer, looking to create a distinct color for his company’s tires, approached the Peekskill Chemical Company in New York. The Peekskill chemists succeeded in creating a darker tire by adding carbon black as an ingredient to the rubber mixture. More importantly, they discovered that not only did the tire change color, it also became more durable. To their amazement, black tires lasted five times longer than white ones!

Q: When you take pills, you may notice that they tend to be different colors and shapes. Why?

(A) Small differences make it easier to tell them apart.

(B) A pill’s shape indicates its dosage strength.

(C) It’s just a random creation of medicine machines.

A: You’re wise if you picked answer A. Medication is a billion dollar business and thousands of pills exist within the industry. In order to make sure people know which pill they’re taking, drug companies pick shape and color combinations which are not available on the market yet. Additionally, pills usually come in warm colors because this makes patients more willing to take them. That is why you seldom see black or gray pills.

Q: You may have noticed that the pattern of the ace of spades is larger than other aces’. Why?

(A) It’s the most powerful card in a standard deck of playing cards.

(B) It’s to stop cheaters from hiding the ace in their shirt pockets.

(C) It stems from an old 17th century English tax law.

A: You must have an ace up your sleeve if you chose C. A long time ago, many things were taxed and playing cards were no different. Queen Anne of England required a tax stamp for cards to be legally sold. The ace of spades (or spadille) was chosen as the card to mark. The stamps were large, legible, and carried the name of the card manufacturer to prove the tax had been paid. Today, instead of a tax stamp, spadilles proudly display card companies’ trademarks.

Q: Many kinds of fish are used to make sashimi, but you’ll never see raw eel as a menu option. Why?

(A) Eel is required by law to be served grilled.

(B) Uncooked eel blood is harmful to humans.

(C) Cooked eel is less expensive than raw eel.

A: You may have avoided certain illness by guessing B. Eel blood is toxic to humans. Actually, this particular fish is so troublesome to prepare that a professional eel chef is required to serve it. Eel must by grilled or boiled properly to make it safe for human consumption. Poorly prepared eel will have an awful taste and be tough to chew.
