Rick meets Becky, who is walking her dogs in the park:
R: May I pet your dogs?
B: Sure — go ahead.
R: Thanks — my wife and I would love to keep dogs, but we have young children.
B: What difference does that make?
R: We wouldn’t want our kids to get sick — you know, because of something they’d caught from the dogs.
B: If you want your kids to grow up strong and healthy, then you should have pets.
R: How do you mean?
B: It’s been proven: children with pets at home have more robust immune systems and get sick less. Too sterile an environment deprives kids’ bodies of the chance to learn how to fight infections.
R: Really? It does make sense, I guess: I remember when I was at school, there was a kid who had six dogs and four cats at home, but, you know what? He was never off sick — unlike the rest of us.
B: Statistics do show a positive correlation between pet ownership and better school attendance.
R: I’m sold! I’ll discuss with my wife tonight about getting a couple of dogs from the shelter. I’m so glad I met you—and your dogs. I was a real—
B: Stroke of luck?
R: Exactly!
