Major cities like Minneapolis could be impacted.

More than 180 fires burning across Canada.

More than 90 out of control.

And another severe weather threat, days after deadly tornadoes swept through parts of the South.

But can they get past the surging New York Knicks?

And America Strong tonight, the college baseball team that made history by being perfect.

From ABC News world headquarters in New York.

This is World News Tonight.

Good evening.

Thanks for joining us on this Saturday.

I'm Whit Johnson.

Several developing stories as we come on tonight, including the latest tariff whiplash in the trade war.

And a new CDC travel warning.

But we begin with the dangerous air quality threat in the Midwest from the raging wildfires across Canada.

These satellite images showing some of the 180 wildfires burning in Canada.

Dozens are out of control.

And a new severe weather threat for the South and the Plains after a deadly tornado already devastated parts of Kentucky.

And this twister slamming into Athens, Tennessee, on Friday afternoon.

At least five people injured.

Let's get right to meteorologist Dani Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.

And Dani, let's start with the air quality alerts and where we'll see the biggest impact.

With massive amounts of smoke from Canadian wildfires continue to spill South into the upper Midwest this weekend.

Today, the worst of the smoke over the Dakotas into Minnesota, where an air quality alert is still in effect for sensitive groups.

Tomorrow, another plume of smoke pushes South, focusing from Minnesota to Missouri.

We're also watching a new severe weather threat in the Southern Plains tonight.

Much of Oklahoma in the bullseye with strong storms unfolding into the night.

bullseye [ˈbʊlzaɪ] n. 靶心

Tomorrow, the threat shifts South into Texas with damaging wind, large hail, and isolated tornadoes possible.

The system that brought the severe weather to the East Coast, slowly clearing out scattered showers and storms moved through the Northeast tonight, but big changes are on the way.

Whit.

All right, Dani, thank you.

New tariff fallout after Trump promises to raise tariffs on imported steel

Now to the latest in the trade war.

The European Union preparing countermeasures after President Trump doubled tariffs on steel imports to 50%.

An EU spokesperson saying the President's move, quote, adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs.

And tonight, tensions escalating again with China.

Here's ABC's senior White House correspondent Selina Wang.

(…..to Houston.)

Tonight, global backlash after President Trump vows to double tariffs on foreign steel during a rally at a steel mill in Pittsburgh.

We're bringing it up from 25%.

We're doubling it to 50%.

That means that nobody is going to be able to steal your industry.

The European Commission reportedly slamming the move, saying they strongly regret the increase because it undermines ongoing efforts to negotiate a trade deal.

regret [rɪˋgrɛt] v. 遗憾; 惋惜

Warning of countermeasures.

countermeasure [ˋkaʊntɚ͵mɛʒɚ] n. 对策;反抗手段

The United Steelworkers Union in Canada blasted the tariffs as a direct attack on Canadian jobs, saying it would completely shut us out of the U.S. market and called for an immediate and forceful response from the Canadian government.

steelworker [ˋstil͵wɝkɚ] n. 炼钢工人

These new tariff promises come after a week of legal back and forth.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Court of International Trade brought the trade war to a screeching halt, ruling Trump had exceeded his presidential powers because only Congress can levy tariffs.

screeching [ˈskritʃɪŋ] adj. 发出长而刺耳的尖叫声的

levy [ˋlɛvɪ] v. 征收(税等);强索; n. 征税

But a day later, another reversal, at least for now, when an appeals court ruled the tariffs could continue as the appeals process plays out.

play out: to happen

All of this amid escalating tensions with China, which Trump initially tariffed at a staggering 145% before the two countries struck a deal to lower levies during trade talks.

tariff [ˋtærɪf] v. 对……征收关税;定……的税率

The administration, now acknowledging talks have stalled the path forward, unclear.

I believe that we will be having more talks with them in the next few weeks, and I believe we may at some point have a call between the President and Party Chair Xi.

And with this legal battle around tariffs is expected to end up in the Supreme Court.

The President claims this is judicial overreach and that it harms his agenda and his ability to negotiate with other countries.

overreach [͵ovɚˋritʃ] v. to do more than your authority allows

But meanwhile, American businesses and consumers are caught up in the middle of all of this.

Whit.

And Selena, there's also some breaking news coming out of the White House about a NASA nominee.

Yeah.

That's right.

Tonight, the White House is announcing that they've just withdrawn Jared Isaacman's nomination, just days before his scheduled confirmation votes in the Senate.

The White House says they'll announce a replacement soon.

And it's essential that this person is in complete alignment with the President's agenda.

Whit. Selina Wang for us tonight.

Thank you.

And tune in to this week.

Tomorrow morning.

George Stephanopoulos speaks with top White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett about the legal battles facing the Trump administration's sweeping tariffs.

President’s pardons drawing scrutiny from Democrats

Next tonight, President Trump also facing scrutiny over a flurry of pardons.

flurry [ˋflɝɪ] n. 陣(風)

At least one Democratic Congressman is accusing the White House of doling out pardons as favors.

dol[dol]v. 发放(赈济物)

This week, Trump pardoned a popular rapper and reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley.

ABC's Perry Russom is in Washington tonight.

Tonight, Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin accusing the Trump administration of giving pardons as favors to President Trump's loyal political followers and most generous donors.

In a letter to Pardon Attorney Ed Martin, Raskin says he wants to know the formal criteria and process of evaluating pardon applications.

criteria [kraɪˋtɪrɪə] n. (判断、批评的)标准,准则,尺度(criterion的名词复数)

Raskin says those criteria appear to include showing absolute personal and political loyalty to President Trump, the Congressman, pointing to the pardons and commutations given to January 6th defendants, many of them convicted of perpetrating violence against law enforcement during the Capitol riot.

commutation [͵kɑmjʊˋteʃən] n. 减刑

And Julie and Todd Chrisley, reality TV personalities who served two and a half years in federal prison after being convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion.

Thank God for a President like Donald J. Trump.

The couple's daughter, Savannah, fiercely lobbying for her parents at the Republican National Convention last year.

Due to our public profile and conservative beliefs, they accused my parents of fraud.

According to the Trump administration, other than the nearly 1600 January 6th defendants who received pardons and commutations, Trump has pardoned or commuted the sentences of more than 60 people since taking office in January.

commute [kəˋmjut] v. 减轻(刑罚等)

When asked, Trump left open the possibility of pardoning Sean Diddy Combs if he's convicted.

I haven't seen him.

I haven't spoken to him in years.

The music mogul on trial in New York City accused of sex trafficking and racketeering.

racketeering [͵rækɪtˋɪrɪŋ] n. 敲诈勒索;诈骗钱财

Combs pleading not guilty.

If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don't like me, it wouldn't have any impact on me.

mistreat [mɪsˋtrit] v. to treat a person or animal badly, cruelly, or unfairly

And with the White House responding tonight, calling Congressman Raskin a career blowhard with zero credibility, and this is not the first partisan battle over pardons.

blowhard [ˋblo͵hɑrd] n.【美】【口】吹牛专家

Back in January, Republicans were upset with President Biden when he pardoned his son, Hunter.

Just hours before leaving office.

Hunter was waiting to be sentenced on felony charges.

Whit. Perry Russom.

Thank you.

CDC upgrades travel warnings over measles

Tonight, the CDC is stepping up the warning about measles just as the summer travel season kicks into high gear, urging travelers to take precautions.

Because measles cases are rising in many countries around the world.

Here's ABC's Morgan Norwood.

Tonight, as the busy summer travel season takes off, a fresh warning from the CDC.

The agency now says measles remains an ongoing global threat.

And more international travelers are getting infected.

They're also urging all international travelers to ensure they're fully vaccinated against measles before their trip.

Just this week, 42 new cases reported nationwide, bringing the total to more than 1000 across 32 states, mostly among people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.

In Colorado, officials confirming the state's second outbreak of the year after three passengers on a Turkish Airlines flight tested positive, including one fully vaccinated adult.

Health officials say while breakthrough cases among those vaccinated are rare, measles is extremely contagious and can linger in the air for up to two hours.

Measles is one of the most infectious viruses that we know.

Make sure that you're vaccinated and your risk for measles goes way down.

And as the CDC grapples with the growing number of measles cases, the agency quietly revising its COVID vaccine guidance just days after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr said vaccines would no longer be recommended for healthy children and pregnant women.

Tonight, the CDC says all children may receive the shot with guidance from their doctor, softening earlier language that had strongly recommended vaccination for everyone over six months of age.

soften [ˋsɔfn] v. 使…变缓和

Pregnant women now left with no recommendation on whether to vaccinate.

And tonight, medical groups we spoke with emphasize the science and benefit of these vaccines hasn't changed, but they worry the shifting messaging from federal officials could leave some patients confused. Whit.

Morgan Norwood.

Thank you.

Chicago shooting leads to seven teenagers injured in alleged drive-by

Now to the urgent search for suspects after seven teenagers were injured in what police are calling a drive-by shooting overnight in Chicago.

Father Michael Pfleger, an anti-violence activist in Chicago, says the violence in their neighborhood is personal.

We work too hard in this area for somebody to come in here and shoot up a bunch of kids.

So, yeah, this is personal to me.

All seven were hospitalized.

One is in serious condition.

Father Pfleger is offering $10,000 for any information leading to an arrest.

Whit.  Ike Ejiochi. Thank you.

Witkoff says Hamas ceasefire counter-offer “totally unacceptable”

Overseas now, Hamas pushing back against the latest ceasefire proposal from the U.S., backed by Israel.

push back 拖延,推迟

It comes as Israel launches daily assaults into Gaza amid starvation and growing desperation.

A top U.S. negotiator calling the latest demands from Hamas completely unacceptable.

ABC's chief foreign correspondent Ian Pannell is in Tel Aviv.

Tonight. Hopes for a breakthrough ceasefire in Gaza fading.

fade [fed] v. 逐渐消失

The U.S. envoy to the Middle East calling a proposal by Hamas totally unacceptable.

The militants pushing back against a ceasefire and hostage deal first proposed by President Trump and backed by Israel.

The original plan would involve a 60 day ceasefire and the release of some hostages.

In exchange, Israel would release some Palestinian prisoners and withdraw its forces to a buffer zone and allow more aid in.

Hamas, saying it wants a permanent ceasefire, a complete Israeli withdrawal and the continuous flow of humanitarian aid.

But tonight, the U.S., rejecting Hamas's counter, saying Hamas should accept the framework proposal we put forward as the basis for proximity talks on the ground.

counter [ˋkaʊntɚ] n. 相反之事物; 对立物

proximity talk 近距离会谈; a process where a neutral third party, or mediator, acts as an intermediary between two opposing parties that are unwilling or unable to engage in direct negotiations.

Israel pounding Gaza once again.

It's launched almost daily attacks since it broke the last ceasefire in mid-March.

Netanyahu's government insisting it's targeting terrorist infrastructure and the death and desperation for food.

They're only growing.

And for now, there's no end in sight to the suffering.

With Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu also calling the Hamas response a rejection.

And tonight, Israeli forces urging a large scale evacuation of parts of Southern Gaza amid fears of another night of heavy bombing.

Whit.

Ian Pannell in Israel again tonight.

Thank you.

Wife rescues husband trapped by 700 pound boulder

Back here in the U.S., and a dramatic rescue of a hiker trapped for three hours under a 700 pound boulder in Alaska.

His wife, a former state trooper, helping to save his life.

trooper [ˋtrupɚ] n.【美】州警官

Here's ABC's Melissa Adan.

Tonight, a terrifying ordeal after a 61 year-old hiker was trapped under a 700 pound boulder for three hours.

ordeal [ɔrˋdiəl] n. 严峻考验;苦难,折磨

Cal Morris was hiking near a glacier South of Anchorage with his wife over Memorial Day weekend, when suddenly the rocky terrain slid out from under him.

slid [slɪd] pt. of slide

I ended up face down in the water, and the boulder that pinned me rolled down and rolled on top of me.

There was a space to keep me from being just completely crushed flat.

His wife, Jo Rupe, a retired Alaska state trooper, holding her husband's head above the rising glacial waters, then rushing to get cell signal to call for help.

Somehow I've got to figure out the best way to save his life.

The Seward Fire Department and a private helicopter company jumping in to save Morris.

Crews using airbags, ropes and brute force to lift the boulder off Morris.

brute force 蛮力;强力,极大的力量

It took everybody and God to save him.

Morris was found face down on that creek, hypothermic and in and out of consciousness.

However, he is expected to make a full recovery.

Whit.

Wow, what a story, Melissa.

Thank you.

Knicks-Pacers battle in crucial Game 6 in NBA Eastern Conference finals

Now to the NBA playoffs and the big battle tonight.

The Indiana Pacers fighting to punch their ticket to the finals.

Ryan Field from our New York station WABC joins us from Indianapolis.

And Ryan, it's win or go home for the Knicks.

Whit, this is the proverbial calm before the storm here at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in what will surely be the biggest game of the season for both of these teams.

proverbial [prəˋvɝbɪəl] adj. 谚语的; 出名的,众所周知的

(the) calm before the storm 暴风雨前的平静

Make no mistake about that.

The Knicks needing a win tonight to force a Game Seven back in New York Monday night.

And that's a proposition the Pacers want.

proposition [͵prɑpəˋzɪʃən] n. 陈述;主张;论点

No part of that you can be sure of. Indiana needing just one more win to punch its ticket to the NBA finals for the first time in 25 years.

The question is which Pacers team will show up?

Will it be the one who scored 130 points in Game Four?

Or the one who was held to just 94 points in Game Five, which was the Pacers lowest scoring output since early February?

For the Knicks, it's simple.

They need to limit turnovers and get big games from Jalen Brunson and Karl Anthony Towns.

That's been their recipe for success in these playoffs, as they're looking to become just the fifth team in NBA history to win a series this late in the post season.

After trailing three games to one.

trail [trel] v. 落后于

We're expecting this to be the best game of the series, and we do know this much.

The winner will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game One of the NBA Finals Thursday night, right here on ABC.

It's been a crazy ride.
