Elon Musk: "Kill the Bill" that defines Trump's agenda

Good evening. We'll have more on this urgent manhunt for a father considered dangerous after what he's allegedly done to his family.

And, of course, the air quality alerts for millions of Americans at this hour, from Nebraska to the Northeast, South to Florida.

The smoke from fires, and now this 2,000-mile-wide Saharan dust cloud moving in over the U.S.

Lee Goldberg standing by. But we begin tonight here with President Trump and Elon Musk.

Of course, once inseparable on the campaign trail and then in the White House.

Tonight, Elon Musk urging his more than 200 million followers to call members of Congress to have them, quote, kill the bill.

President Trump's budget bill. In the last 24 hours, Musk saying, I can't stand it anymore. Furious over the level of spending.

Tonight here, the new nonpartisan report that says this budget bill could add $2.4 trillion to the debt, and nearly 11 million Americans could lose their health insurance.

Mary Bruce leading us off.

Reporter: He was one of President Trump's closest advisers, just last week, given a golden key to the White House.

But tonight, Elon Musk is urging his 220 million followers to tank the bill that defines Trump's agenda.

tank [tæŋk] v. 重创

Musk posting on X, "Call your senator, call your congressman. Bankrupting America is not okay. Kill the bill."

flat [flæt] adv. 恰恰,正好

Reporter: Today, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office saying the bill, which extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts and makes cuts to Medicaid would force 11 million Americans to lose their health insurance over ten years.

And add $2.4 trillion to the national debt. Musk labeling it a disgusting abomination.

The President still hasn't said a word about Musk's outburst, at least not publicly.

outburst [ˋaʊt͵bɝst] n.(情感、力量等的)爆发

He's not delighted that Elon did a 180 on that, but look, I don't know what happened in 24 hours.

Everybody can draw their own conclusions about that.

Reporter: Some Republicans suggest Musk may be motivated by his own self-interest.

Sources telling us he's frustrated the bill cuts the electric vehicle tax credit, which benefits Tesla owners.

tax credit 扣抵税额

They say he's also annoyed Trump struck deals with rival A.I. companies, and that Trump withdrew his choice for NASA administrator.

Why do you think Elon Musk is trying to kill this bill?

Well, I can't speak to, you know, his reasons other than what he stated.

Reporter: But the fact is, even before Musk's campaign to kill the bill, a number of Republican senators had serious concerns of their own, among them, Rand Paul of Kentucky.

But I can't in good conscience give up every principle that I stand for and every principle that I was elected upon, and that's that youcan't accumulate more debt.

Reporter: And the President just wrapping a meeting here with key Republicans, but David, tonight, all eyes are on the breakdown of this relationship between Elon Musk and President Trump.

Musk just posting again moments ago, railing against this bill. David?
