12:26 Remembering the life and legacy of Brian Wilson, Beach Boys singer-songwriter
Tonight here, we remember Brian Wilson, the gifted singer, songwriter, and of course, leader of the Beach Boys, an artistic genius who left his peers in awe.
Tonight here, his music, his personal battles, and his influence, his music defining an era.
Here are the Beach Boys.
Brian Wilson was the leader, the chief songwriter for the Beach Boys.
They were the kings of the summer anthem.
anthem [ˋænθəm] n. 颂歌,赞歌
There was I Get Around.
Nineteen-year-old Brian Wilson, with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and their good friend Al Jardine, becoming the Beach Boys, the defining American band of that era.
Brian Wilson didn't surf, but his gift for music left his peers in awe.
Their breakthrough, Surfing USA, 1963.
And it was Brian who took the harmonies the group perfected as high schoolers in Hawthorne, California, and turned them into rock and roll royalty.
Writing, arranging, and producing most of their catalog, singing as the lead co-vocalist, and playing the guitar and keyboard too.
arrange [əˋrendʒ] v. 改编(乐曲)
vocalist [ˋvokəlɪst] n. 歌手;歌唱家
Writing a wave of success with so many hits, including Help Me Rhonda, California Girls, and Don't Worry Baby.
Who determines, Brian, what will be done next?
Well, I guess I do.
I don't know.
I write the songs and produce them, so I have a lot to say about it.
There was Fun, Fun, Fun.
They would dominate the charts.
But Brian Wilson would acknowledge he had trouble with the fame.
He would take a break from touring, overwhelmed by the band's success.
Two years later, in 1966, writing the band's most critically acclaimed album, Pet Sounds.
It wasn't a commercial hit at first.
It was different.
It was deep.
Paul McCartney said it was that album that blew me out of the water.
blew … out of the water(以压倒性姿态)战胜…, 彻底击垮
McCartney said, I figured no one is educated musically till they've heard that album.
That album with the classic, Wouldn't It Be Nice, now considered one of the greatest albums of all time.
McCartney sang, God Only Knows, reduces him to tears.
Good Vibrations followed shortly after, selling more than a million copies, more than any other Beach Boys single.
Vibrations, she's giving me the excitation.
excitation [͵ɛksaɪˋteʃən] n. 刺激;激励;兴奋
But Brian Wilson would struggle, saying once, I had a hell of a time getting through some of the frustrations that go along with being a successful artist.
I was riding a wave, riding a crest.
Then later on, I got scared.
I got lost.
He struggled with mental health and drugs.
Brian Wilson died today at the age of 82, the last surviving brother.
And through the years, when asked how he wanted to be remembered, he would often say, I just hope people will remember me as a guy who really wrote good music.
I think that music is very healing.
It puts me into a quiet place to create or to do what I'm supposed to do.
His music defining an era.
Incredible impact.
And we are hearing from the daughters tonight, Brian Wilson's daughters, Carnie and Wendy.
We are deeply saddened to say goodbye to our hero and daddy.
We know how he touched so many people with his musical gifts, and we are so thankful for the support.
They end by saying, may he rest in peace in music.
And what we also found in the archives today, the Beach Boys on 20/20, showing us in a very rare and candid moment, how they harmonize.
harmonize [ˋhɑrmə͵naɪz] v. 以和声唱(或演奏)
candid [ˋkændɪd] adj. 率直的;(照片)乘人不备时拍的,偷拍的

And the dangerous chemical leak at an explosives plant forcing evacuations.
You can see that orange cloud right there hovering in the sky.
We'll have more on this in a moment here.
A lot more ahead.

The defense denying the allegations, insisting there's video of the alleged victim, quote, having the time of his life.
When we come back here tonight, that dangerous chemical leak, an orange cloud in the sky.
And the rare moment with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.
And you'll see it.
18:02 Toxic chemical leak forces evacuation, temporary flight restriction in Ohio region
To the index, a chemical leak at an explosives plant forced hundreds of evacuations in Vinton County, Ohio.
Authorities say about 3,000 gallons of nitric acid were released from a 5,000-gallon tank at the Austin powder plant.
An orange cloud spotted in the air for a time.
The evacuation order was lifted late today.
No employees were hurt.
When we come back here tonight, that rare candid moment with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, showing us how they harmonized.
18:36 Rare, behind-the-scenes moment with Brian Wilson on 20/20
Finally tonight here, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.
As we were pouring through past interviews, we found a moment on 20-20 back in 1980.
The song, Their Hearts Were Full of Spring.
Brian Wilson spontaneously showing how they harmonized.
And the whole thing together is.
There's a story told of a very gentle boy and the girl who wore his ring.
Celebrating Brian Wilson and his musical genius.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Good night.
