Police say he allegedly posed as an officer and after exchanging fire with police, got away on foot.

Thousands told to shelter in place.

Inside the suspect's vehicle, authorities finding a hit list of possible targets, including Governor Tim Walz, the latest from the scene.

Also tonight, thousands of protesters taking to the streets in all 50 states in opposition to President Trump's policies and his immigration crackdown and how U.S. Marines are being deployed in Los Angeles.

All of this as the massive military parade gets underway in the nation's capital.

And America Strong tonight, they've been keeping us safe and free for 250 years.

We salute the U.S. Army.

From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight.

Good evening.

Thanks for joining us on this Saturday.

I'm Whit Johnson.

Several breaking stories as we come on tonight.

The massive military parade in Washington, D.C., and protests across the country.

But we begin tonight with the urgent manhunt in Minnesota happening right now.

02:14 Michigan lawmaker killed in “politically motivated attack”

A suspect on the run after what authorities call a politically motivated assassination.

Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, both gunned down early this morning inside their home in Brooklyn Park.

Just a few miles away, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times at their home, now recovering in a local hospital.

This video showing their front door riddled with bullet holes, hundreds of police and sheriff's deputies on the scene searching for clues and a possible motive.

riddle [ˋrɪd!] v. 使布满洞孔

Investigators identifying the suspected gunman as 57-year-old Vance Luther Bolter.

Several sources telling ABC News that the suspect had a list of possible targets, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Several planned protests canceled today as thousands were told to shelter in place.

ABC's Faith Abubay leads us off from the scene in Minnesota.

Tonight, a manhunt in Minnesota for 57-year-old Vance Bolter, who authorities say assassinated a beloved Minnesota lawmaker and her husband, and wounded another legislator and his spouse while posing as a police officer.

Do not approach him.

You should consider him armed and dangerous.

Around 2 a.m., police in Champlin, northwest of Minneapolis, responding to reports of a shooting at the home of State Senator John Hoffman.

A black SUV had red and blue flashlights.

Suspects posing as police officers shot two victims.

Officers finding Hoffman and his wife Yvette in their home wounded, rushing them to the hospital.

Meanwhile, eight miles away in Brooklyn Park, a fast-thinking sergeant deciding to proactively check on the home of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman.

sergeant [ˋsɑrdʒənt] n. 警察小队长,警官

When they arrived at Melissa's house, they noticed that there was a police vehicle in the driveway with the lights, emergency lights on, and what appeared to be a police officer at the door coming out of the house.

When our officers confronted them, the individual immediately fired upon the officers who exchanged gunfire and the suspect retreated back into the home.

Inside, police finding the bodies of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark.

They say the suspect was dressed as a police officer, complete with a badge, vest and taser, and a realistic-looking latex mask, fleeing on foot.

taser [ˈtezɚ] n. 泰瑟枪

latex [ˋletɛks] n.【植】【化】乳汁;乳胶

Thousands told to shelter in place, officials warning residents their officers will only travel in pairs.

If there's only one officer outside the door, do not answer the door and call 911.

Authorities say they found a hit list inside the vehicle with names of dozens of Democratic Minnesota lawmakers, including Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Senator Tina Smith.

Sources tell ABC News that abortion providers were also on that list, and law enforcement is looking into whether the suspect may have been motivated by extreme views on abortion.

abortion [əˋbɔrʃən] n. 小产;堕胎

Police say they also found these flyers in the vehicle for the No King's Day protest taking place today, organizers in Minnesota canceling them out of an abundance of caution.

flyer [ˋflaɪɚ] n.(广告)传单

This was an act that targeted political violence.

State Representative Melissa Hortman was a mother of two.

News of her murder stunning lawmakers nationwide.

Minnesota's Governor Tim Walz heartbroken.

Speaker Hortman was someone who served the people of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humor and a sense of service.

She was a formidable public servant, a fixture and a giant in Minnesota.

formidable [ˋfɔrmɪdəb!] adj. 巨大的;杰出的

fixture [ˋfɪkstʃɚ] n. 长期固定于某项工作(或某种活动)的人

She is irreplaceable and we've been missed by so many.

Minnesota's thoughts and prayers are with her family, her loved ones, her children and her parents.

And with that shelter in place order just lifted, even though that suspect still on the run at this hour as this urgent investigation continues here in Brooklyn Park.

The FBI offering $50,000 for information leading to that suspect's arrest, releasing these images just from a few hours ago of that suspect wearing a cowboy hat.

They say he is armed and dangerous and do not approach him Whit.

And  that neighborhood still on edge.

Faith Abubay, thank you.

06:27 Thousands of “No Kings” protests nationwide

We move now to other major news on this Saturday night, massive crowds gathering from coast to coast for those so-called no King's Day protests, counter-programming to the military parade in Washington, D.C., marking the Army's 250th birthday.

Protests planned in all 50 states and law enforcement on high alert.

ABC's Matt Gutman is in Los Angeles tonight.

Tonight thousands of protests taking place nationwide against the Trump administration's policies and perceived overreach and to counter-program the president's military parade in Washington.

From Atlanta to New York and Durham, North Carolina, from Frisco, Texas and Angola, Indiana in the center of the country to San Diego on the West Coast.

Overall, more than 2,000 separate demonstrations of different sizes in all 50 states today, according to the organizers of the so-called no King's protests, voicing opposition to Trump's agenda.

We're advocating for the rights of our immigrant families.

I'm a proud American that I'm not very happy with things that are going on in our country.

And today the president seeming to blink on his immigration crackdown.

blink [blɪŋk] v. 视若无睹

Today DHS officials confirming to ABC News the president told ICE to pause most raids on farms, hotels and restaurants.

Protesters marching right up to the president's doorstep, demonstrators today near Mar-a-Lago at times standing face-to-face with a line of heavily armed officers.

at times 有時;偶爾

In Minnesota, many of the planned demonstrations were canceled due to that horrific shooting after authorities say they found flyers for the protests in a vehicle at the scene.

And in Austin, the Texas state capitol evacuated after authorities there say they identified a credible threat towards state lawmakers planning to attend the protest.

And here in Los Angeles, an estimated 20,000 gathering, and we were there as the throng arrived outside the federal building.

throng [θrɔŋ] n. 人群;大群

Many hundreds of people flocking right here to the federal building and guarding the lobby are active duty U.S. Marines, and you can hear the crowd chant, shame on you.

Tensions in the city still high amid a week of immigration protests that have led to clashes between police and demonstrators.

And Whit, despite the obvious tension behind me, we've seen tens of thousands of protesters out here in the streets of Los Angeles, and it has been absolutely peaceful.

Police have taken a very hands-off approach.

hands-off 不介入的, 袖手旁观的

Still the LAPD says the curfew that's been in effect for parts of downtown LA will remain in effect tonight and into tomorrow.

Whit.

Matt Gutman tonight.

Thank you.

09:07 Trump commemorates Army’s 250th anniversary with massive military parade

Now to that elaborate military parade in Washington, D.C., a celebration of the Army's 250th anniversary following on Flag Day and President Trump's 79th birthday.

Here's ABC's senior White House correspondent Selena Wang.

Tonight an unprecedented show of military might as President Trump's massive Army parade gets underway.

Thousands of soldiers, tanks, and fighter jets rolling through the nation's capital.

The official reason for the parade, marking the Army's 250th anniversary.

But it also happens to be Flag Day and President Trump's 79th birthday.

Thousands braving the stormy forecast to get a glimpse of the festivities.

It's a show of force Trump has long wanted after he attended France's annual Bastille Day parade in 2017.

Bastille [bæˋstil] n. 巴士底监狱

Even though parades like this are rare in the U.S. and are fixtures in authoritarian regimes, the Army estimates it will cost taxpayers as much as $45 million.

fixture [ˋfɪkstʃɚ] n.(确定了日期的)竞赛大会(或社会活动)

A new AP-NORC Poll finds Americans divided.

Six in ten say the parade is not a good use of government funds.

$45 million for a parade, for God's sake.

Money should be put in defense medical research.

Democrats slamming the price tag as his administration slashes programs for veterans' health care and jobs at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Crowds of vets protesting the parade and the Trump administration.

I feel like it's my responsibility to be out here to remind people and then just to try to uphold that rule of law and the Constitution.

uphold [ʌpˋhold] v. 维护;维持; 支持

And overnight, dozens of U.S. veterans arrested outside of the Capitol as they demonstrated against the celebration, including this 87-year-old man with a walker, handcuffed and taken away by police.

walker [ˋwɔkɚ] n.(老年人等用的)助行架

And with just hours before the parade started, President Trump posted on social media that Russia's Vladimir Putin called him to wish him a happy birthday, saying they also spoke about the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East.

According to Russian state media, Vladimir Putin said that Russia is ready to mediate between Israel and Iran.

Whit.

Selena Wang, thank you.

Now to the thousands gathering for that military parade, ABC's Stephanie Ramos joins us now from Washington along the parade route.

And Stephanie, what are we going to see tonight?

Well, Whit, to celebrate the Army's anniversary, more than 6,000 soldiers from across the country dressed in modern and historic uniforms from every major conflict involving the U.S. military will march in this parade right behind me on Constitution Avenue.

The parade includes more than two dozen tanks in the streets of Washington, 28 Stryker combat vehicles, 28 Bradley fighting vehicles, an array of other vehicles, horses, mules and aircraft.

This is the largest display of military might since the end of the Gulf War in 1991.

The parade also looking to the future.

Those who have recently enlisted or are reenlisting will stop, turn to the reviewing stand and will be sworn in by the president himself.

reviewing stand 阅兵台;检阅台

Whit.

Our Stephanie Ramos, who is also an Army major in the reserve, thank you for your service and for your reporting tonight.

major [ˋmedʒɚ] n.(美国)陆军(或空军、海军陆战队)少校

And ABC News Live will have special coverage celebrating the Army's 250th, streaming now across multiple platforms.

12:16 Iran cancels nuclear talks with U.S. after Israel strikes

Now to the fast moving developments in the Middle East, Israel and Iran launching a barrage of counterstrikes.

This video appearing to show the interception of a drone over Israel.

Iran now canceling those nuclear talks with the U.S. scheduled for tomorrow.

ABC's Marcus Moore is in Tel Aviv tonight.

Tonight Iran calling off Sunday's scheduled talks with the U.S. as Israel and Iran launch new waves of attacks.

Iranian state media airing this video of an Israeli drone strike on a natural gas plant as Israel continues its attacks.

And tonight, these before and after satellite images show damage to a Revolutionary Guard facility.

Israel also claiming to have killed at least nine Iranian nuclear scientists.

Iran saying at least 60 people have been killed.

Tehran retaliating with attacks throughout Israel.

This Iranian drone intercepted over an Israeli kibbutz.

kibbutz [kɪˋbʊts] n. 基布兹(以色列的合作农场)

But this area outside Tel Aviv hit hard.

We saw the damage firsthand.

You can see the buildings heavily damaged in the distance there.

Those cars destroyed and debris everywhere.

Now I am the collateral damage.

collateral damage 附带损失

I look horrified at what happens in Gaza, but now it's like in my back door.

At least three Israelis have been killed and dozens injured.

The unrest in the Middle East causing crude oil prices to rise.

Friday prices jumping over 7%.

The tensions leading to heightened security in New York City with increased police presence at Jewish sites.

And with late tonight Iran launching another attack, this time in northern Israel.

Israeli officials say at least 14 people have been injured.

Meanwhile, back in the U.S., because of the heightened tensions, Northern Command announced it's boosting security at U.S. military bases.

Whit.

Marcus Moore, thank you.

13:59 Weather forecast

Now to the severe weather threat with heavy rain in the east and flood alerts for parts of the mid-Atlantic.

And lightning nearly struck this man in Fort Morgan, Colorado.

Let's get right to meteorologist Jeff Smith from our New York station WABC.

And Jeff, some dangerous conditions expected overnight.

All right.

Now, Whit, you mentioned Colorado.

That's where we have a newly issued severe thunderstorm watch right now.

Northeastern Colorado, eastern parts of Wyoming, western parts of Nebraska.

It could be two-inch hail.

It could be winds gusting up to 70 miles per hour in those areas.

Flooding is a concern near the nation's capital for all those big festivities tonight.

Could be one to three inches of rain there.

Meanwhile, out west, it's the heat.

Nine million people under extreme heat warnings from southern California to southern parts of Arizona.

Where we're talking about not only triple digit heat, but well into the triple digits for places like Phoenix tomorrow, Monday, into Tuesday.

Whit.

Really a mixed bag across the country.

Yes.

Jeff Smith, thank you.

Sure.

We appreciate it.

14:51 Families of victims in India plane crash speak out

Overseas now to that horrific plane crash in India.

More than 270 people died after the Air India flight fell from the sky.

Recovery teams are on the scene amid the painstaking task of identifying the victims.

And tonight, we hear from the grieving families.

ABC's James Longman reports from India.

The death toll from the Air India disaster now stands at 275 tonight, although the ferocity of the explosion means many bodies have yet to be formally identified.

ferocity [fəˋrɑsətɪ] n. 凶猛; 激烈

DNA testing is now underway, so remains can be returned to grieving families.

Scores on the ground were killed and injured too, like Suresh's wife and son.

This gentleman's wife ran a tea store for 40 years right near the medical college.

Their son, 15 years old, went to find her.

He's been killed and she's in the ICU.

This video of his wife, Sita, has gone viral in India.

You can see her in the street, desperate for help.

Suresh says she ran back into the fire for their son, Akash.

That's a picture of him.

That's him there.

A moment later, another family member shows me her phone.

They're showing me some very distressing videos there, including what this lady says is that 15-year-old boy, his body on fire in the street.

distressing [dɪˋstrɛsɪŋ] adj. 使人痛苦的;令人烦恼的

Sanjay was there when the plane came down.

He rushed to action, jet fuel turning everything to fire and ash.

He says he pulled 28 bodies from the wreckage.

And this man with his bare hands is pulling out the charred remains of some of the people who've been killed.

charred [tʃɑrd] adj. 烧黑了的

I mean, this tragedy has required extraordinary courage from ordinary people.

And Whit, an American team from the NTSB is flying in to help with the investigation so these families can get some of the answers they need.

Whit.

Heartbreaking images there.

James Longman, thank you.

There's still much more ahead on World News tonight, this Saturday, including the fire that shook up tourists on the Las Vegas Strip.

And the first American pope delivers a heartfelt message to his hometown, Chicago.

heartfelt [ˋhɑrt͵fɛlt] adj. 衷心的,真诚的

16:52 Investigation underway after fireworks ignite palm trees on Las Vegas Strip

Next night, tourists were rattled overnight on the Las Vegas Strip.

Police say someone threw fireworks from a vehicle early this morning, setting two palm trees on fire outside the Aria Resort and Casino.

The flames were quickly put out.

No injuries reported.

Investigators say they're looking for a car that was seen driving away from the scene.

When we come back, a homecoming of sorts for Pope Leo, his message of hope to the faithful.

of sorts 勉强称得上的,凑合的

17:20 Pope Leo appears in recorded address at White Sox game

To the Index now, and Pope Leo appeared at his favorite ballpark today.

In a recorded address, the pope spoke to the faithful at the stadium where the Chicago White Sox play.

Leo grew up just outside Chicago.

He directed his message to those who suffer from depression or sadness, saying, the love of God is truly healing and brings hope.

Still ahead from every corner of the world, American soldiers celebrating the U.S. Army.

17:49 Salute to service members on Army’s 250th anniversary

Finally, tonight, a salute to the men and women who've been protecting America for 250 years.

Happy birthday!

Tonight, those two words, happy birthday, ringing out all over the world.

Happy birthday!

From Hungary to the Philippines.

Happy birthday, Army.

Happy birthday, U.S. Army.

From Minnesota to Delaware.

Happy birthday, Army.

This will defend.

Millions of soldiers over generations living by that motto, this will defend.

Now celebrating that 250-year legacy and honoring those who've sacrificed.

For some, service is a long family tradition.

The Maces have served in almost every major American conflict.

It's special to me because I have an ancestor, a five-times great-grandfather that was there at day one.

19 April, he was there in Lexington, so it's exciting.

In the sky, the iconic Golden Knights performing and competing in skydiving across the globe.

We want to connect America's Army with America's people and show them what we are more than what they see in movies.

Armat Gutman jumping with the elite team ahead of the anniversary.

I don't think you ever get the appreciation of what it is gliding down, having a real bird's-eye view.

appreciation [ə͵priʃɪˋeʃən] n. 欣赏,鉴赏

We like to think of ourselves as a bright, shiny object.

Hey, look at us.

What was the bright, shiny object 250 years ago?

The bright, shiny object was freedom.

And we are grateful.

Happy birthday.

I'm Whit Johnson in New York.

Good night.

Thank you for making World News Tonight with David Muir, America's most-watched newscast.
