Want to look hot in a flash? Slip on some sunglasses! Not only will they protect your eyes from the damaging rays of the sun, but the right pair of “shades” can launch your coolness levels sky-high. Why is it that we all seem to agree on the suave yet mysterious appeal of sunglasses? Perhaps it’s because movie stars were the first to wear them, initially to shield their eyes from bright studio lights, and later to disguise themselves from the prying eyes of fans on the street.

Even today, celebrities including Bono, Brad Pitt, and Elton John are rarely seen in public without a stylish pair of sunglasses. Movies like Men in Black and The Matrix have only further reinforced the image that characters in shades are dashing, mysterious heroes that are somehow connected to the “upper crust” or secret societies of the world.

Looking at life through tinted lenses isn’t a new idea, and in the eighteenth century, James Ayscough experimentedwith blue and green tinted lenses for eyeglasses, but not for protection against the sun. He believed that a colored lenses could correct certain vision impairments. Although he was mistaken, tinted lenses appeared again in 1929, but this time it was to block the rays of the sun. It was Sam Foster who began successfully selling Foster Grant sunglasses on the famous beachside boardwalk of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Then, in 1936, Edwin H. Land added a Polaroid filter to sunglass lenses, which drastically eliminated glare. Now, for many people, sunglasses are a necessary accessory as well as a powerful fashion statement.

More and more people are wearing sunglasses because they look trendy and cool. But besides this, sunglasses may save your eyesight. Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun that make it through our already damaged ozone layer not only burn unprotected skin, but also cause substantial damage to unprotected eyes. That’s why having the right pair of sunglasses has become so important in the past decade.

Though sunglasses should be stylish, consumers need to keep in mind that UV protection is paramount when shopping for sunglasses. Not protecting your eyes from UV rays could cause cataracts (a clouding of the eye’s lens) or photokeratitis (sunburn of the cornea), both leading to temporary or permanent blindness.

So, how do you get the best protection? Look for sunglasses specifically labeled as offering 99 to 100 percent UV protection. Don’t just assume that pricier sunglasses or lenses with a darker tint will do the trick. Lenses need to be dark enough to reduce glare, but not so dark as to distort the color of traffic signals.

Also, to maximize the protection given by sunglasses, choose a close-fitting pair with larger lenses, or the ones that wrap all the way around the temples. A good pair of sunglasses should also be impact-resistant, especially if you enjoy outdoor activities such as golfing, skiing, beach volleyball or jogging. If you make a smart purchase when you buy sunglasses that protect your eyes as well as look good, you’ll have it made in the shade this summer.
