Israel Battles Hezbollah in Lebanon

The conflict began on July 12 when eight Israeli soldiers were killed and two were captured in a battle between Hezbollah and Israeli forces. Hezbollah is a Shiite militant group that opposes Israel and is active mostly in southern Lebanon. In response, Israel launched a massive military attack into Southern Lebanon and the country’s capital, Beirut. After a recent end to years of civil war, Lebanon had been rebuilding. Now, the fighting is destroying the country’s new-found prosperity.

Study: Surroundings Play Key Role in Diet

A new study shows that our surroundings help determine how much we eat. This phenomenon is called “unit bias.” Simply put, it’s why we think a single unit of food, like a bottle or a plateful, is the right amount to eat, regardless of how big or small it might be. To prove this, researchers put a large bowl of M&Ms in the lobby of an apartment building. They put a sign by it saying “Eat Your Fill,” along with either a large or small spoon. Sure enough, on days when they left the larger spoon, people took two-thirds more M&Ms! The experiment shows that the environment surrounding us affects our idea of what a unit of food should be.
